Archduke's Forest
—
Permaculture and ecology
Permaculture is concerned with the design of sustainable human ecosystems. On the one hand there are natural ecosystems and on the other those created by man, both rural and urban.. A permaculturist creates and designs a space that has been intervened by people. The ecology, which is the science that studies the relationship of living beings with the environment in which they inhabit, is the basic guide of a permaculturer. His source of inspiration is natural systems -like forests, grasslands, lagoons, etc.- and natural ecosystems that have shown great adaptation to the environment.
Archduke Ludwig Salvator
Archduke Luis Salvador described the flora of the Balearic Islands with great breadth and precision in his book Die Balearen (1869-1894). Describe different habitats, shows how the flora evolves throughout the 12 months of the year, lists all the species he observes, and even describes the usual composition of species present in the interior courtyards or corrals of the houses of the time.
Archduke’s Forest and its genesis
Based on the provenance of Archduke Luis Salvador, as a result of the realization of NIXE III project, www.nixe3.com, and the collaboration with the permaculturer Julio Cantos has made it possible to create the “Bosque del Archduque” located in the courtyard of the factory..
Forestmakeup
This space is subdivided into five thematic flowerbeds representing the following landscapes of the Balearic Islands: the mountain forest, the orchard of fruit trees, the scrub, the orchard and the thyme; with a selection of representative species in each of these beds. This project, besides landscaping, it is also a bio-refuge for auxiliary fauna such as bats, geckos and birds of different kinds.
Guide to the Archduke’s Forest
A detailed guide has been put together to explain both the initial inspiration, such as forest development decisions and the selection of different habitats and species. This guide has a descriptive function of the Archduke's forest but is also an educational tool for all those interested in replicating, one way or another, this type of project. The guide is directly accessible from our website.
Classes in the Archduke’s Forest
In the Archduke forest courses are held in relation to natural habitats, the flora of the Balearic Islands, creating similar spaces and caring for plants. These courses are aimed at both young people of school age and adults interested in the subject. On the other hand, the Archduke's forest is an emblematic space where events of a different nature can be held.
